How do you build a structure of that permanence. Most of what we build is destroyed or catabolyzed in much shorter time spans. This building for storing nuclear waste brings about a new temporal relationship between man and nature. It is a challenge for the ages, quite literally. It will take over 100 years to actually build the facility so no one working on it now will probably be alive to see it completed. It is called Onkalo, or cavity in Finnish. This project is explored in Michael Madsen’s film, ‘Into Eternity’.
