A building that will last 100,000 years →
How do you build a structure of that permanence. Most of what we build is destroyed or catabolyzed in much shorter time spans. This building for storing nuclear waste brings about a new temporal relationship between man and nature. It is a challenge for the ages, quite literally. It will take over 100 years to actually build the facility so no one working on it now will probably be alive to see it...

Really awesome map showing population distribution on a new infographic dimension. This website is also a treasure trove of maps and cartographic information. Some really awesome stuff on here. Speaking of maps, there is also that new book out by Ken Jennings: http://www.amazon.com/Maphead-Charting-Weird-World-Geography/dp/1439167176
Not Designed for People (NDfP)
This is the beginning of a multiple post series on examples of urban design that puts cars before people. In this case the people to be specific are the multitudes of pedestrians who have to cross a major highway and are forced to walk through quite a significant amount of water. This intersection in Syracuse, NY has 4-5x the state average in pedestrian accidents....
Steve Jobs: "Death is Life's Best Invention" →
Quite a poignant saying by a man who so clearly understood the world. It is on one sense about the importance of the natural cycles of decay and renewal. That is the basis for ecological cycles. It is interesting that this comes from a founding father of the current tech era because from a digital ecology perspective things are not so cyclical and renewing. Physical pollution is being greatly...
