How do you build a structure of that permanence. Most of what we build is destroyed or catabolyzed in much shorter time spans. This building for storing nuclear waste brings about a new temporal relationship between man and nature. It is a challenge for the ages, quite literally. It will take over 100 years to actually build the facility so no one working on it now will probably be alive to see it completed. It is called Onkalo, or cavity in Finnish. This project is explored in Michael Madsen’s film, ‘Into Eternity’.
Remember when there was DVD+R and DVD-R? Those days were confusing, no one knew which burner their computer had. Macs were usually DVD-R. PCs were all over the place and a lucky few had dual burners.

Really awesome map showing population distribution on a new infographic dimension. This website is also a treasure trove of maps and cartographic information. Some really awesome stuff on here. Speaking of maps, there is also that new book out by Ken Jennings: http://www.amazon.com/Maphead-Charting-Weird-World-Geography/dp/1439167176
Not Designed for People (NDfP)
This is the beginning of a multiple post series on examples of urban design that puts cars before people. In this case the people to be specific are the multitudes of pedestrians who have to cross a major highway and are forced to walk through quite a significant amount of water. This intersection in Syracuse, NY has 4-5x the state average in pedestrian accidents. It is the main entrance to Upstate University Hospital and it is hardly welcoming. Roadway design needs to be more cognizant of all users.
This is one of my favorite simple foods from my childhood. I still remember my mom taking out the measuring cup and using it to cut a circle of bread out. It’s a strangely satisfying feeling. You then just drop in an egg and as it cooks put the circle of bread back in. Voila!
Johnson City, NY
This is where I currently live and apparently is one of the square deal towns. This was part of FDRs plan to bolster the working class economy across America. Johnson city was home to the prosperous shoe manufacturer, the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company. Endicott is also well known as the home of IBM. There is alot of history behind the inscription on that stone arch.
